The Al Wadi Equestrian Adventure Centre is nestled amidst the rolling red dunes of Ras Al Khaimah’s desert lands. The centre is home to beautiful Arabian horses, the rare oryx, swaggering camels, pretty desert foxes and, if you are very fortunate the shy desert cat. The unspoilt environment affords an exceptionally authentic experience as you experience the wilds of Emirati nature at its finest.

Arabian Horses

Arabian horses have always played an intrinsic role in Emirati culture. They are seen as a symbol of pride and nobility. Ras Al Khaimah’s love of the Arabian horse goes back centuries with the Bedouins and their equestrian talent. Arabian horses are celebrated in poetry, immortalised in myth, recorded in religious books and famed for their endurance, strength and loyalty. The handsome horses are considered one of the purest breeds in the world. They have a wide flat forehead, soulful brown eyes, a broad, slightly turned-up nose, long, erect ears, a slender neck and a gloriously shiny mane.

When you visit Al Wadi Equestrian Centre, you can participate in horse riding lessons or a leisurely wander through the dunes on horseback. Experienced riders can gallop across the sands as the sun dips over the terracotta desert. Spacious white picket fenced paddocks and a horse-walking arena allow for safe riding lessons. Well-qualified teachers seamlessly guide beginners, children, intermediate and experienced riders through various skills. Children can also learn how to care for ponies and horses through washing, grooming and walking lessons.

Arabian Oryx

The Arabian Oryx is the national animal of the United Arab Emirates and the largest mammal that lives in the wild, red deserts of Ras Al Khaimah. Interestingly, the oryx was considered on the verge of extinction in the early 1970s. Founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan launched a successful conservation programme which has led to over 10,000 oryx forming the largest population in the world.

The Arabian Oryx is a medium-sized desert antelope also known as W’Dhehi; the males can weigh up to 80 kg. The oryx is primarily white and has dark triangular facial features and leg markings. Their impressive long, straight horns make them easily identifiable. They have broad hooves which allow them to move deftly across the soft sand. Oryx have for many years inspired Arab poets. You’ll see them wandering freely within the nature reserve.

Camels

Camels have been at the centre of life in the UAE for centuries. They have played essential roles in transportation, food and entertainment. They symbolise Emirati cultural heritage and remain intrinsic to the country’s traditions and cultural practices.

Camel riding at Al Wadi Equestrian Centre is a unique experience and allows you to explore landscapes from up high and learn about their importance in Bedouin culture. You can even enjoy an evening in a caravan of camels.

Other Wildlife and Conservation

Al Wadi Equestrian Centre is not only home to horses, oryx and camels, but it’s a fragile ecosystem home to desert vegetation, flowers and trees. The spiny-tailed lizard, rodents, small mammals, foxes, owls and wild cats also find their place in the natural, protected area.
