In the south of the Emirate, explore Al Jazirah Al Hamra, one of the oldest historic towns in the United Arab Emirates. Once a maritime and pearl trading village, its inhabitants abandoned their houses in the middle of the 20th century, when the rush to modernisation started. As the guided tour takes you through the historic village’s little paths and alleys, you’ll be able to see a fort, watchtowers, mosque, souq and extensive courtyard houses of various designs. The village is on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Tentative List and built from coral blocks. Further north are exciting markets and souqs where you’ll find an array of local delicacies, exotic spices and souvenirs. Other historic sites include the Ras Al Khaimah museum and Dhayah Fort.
If you prefer the thrills of adventure, then head to the Jebel Jais mountain peak. At the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp you can take part in an exhilarating survival course. Further up the mountains are various off-road cycling courses that traverse shaley trails. The Via Ferrata hiking and zipline trails and the world’s longest zip line experience is where excitement-seekers will swoop across the deep ravines and sweeping valleys, reaching speeds of up to 150kmph.
An exciting array of activities lie as well at sea level, from the Emirate’s verdant golf courses, desert and dune safaris, camel racing, mangrove kayaking, and endless beach living.
