All sorts of myths and legends surround Al Qasimi Palace in Ras Al Khaimah. The palace was built by Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Humaid Al Qasimi almost four decades ago. The breathtaking building has been unoccupied for many years and houses fascinating interiors such as chandeliers, artefacts and paintings of Islamic, Moroccan and Persian heritage. The palace has only recently opened to the public and holds a sense of mystery. Explore 35 rooms over four storeys and the expansive grounds.

The late Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Humaid Al Qasimi built Al Qasimi Palace in 1985, which reportedly cost in excess of AED 500 million to build. The expansive building is set on a hill. The mysterious façade seems to recount stories of lost times. It appears slightly macabre, especially if you listen to the local tales that the Sheikh and his wife only occupied the palace for one night because of the mysterious paranormal happenings that drove them out. Rumour has that terrified trespassers saw children peering through partly broken stained glass windows, crying out for help and wailing.

Once inside, the recently opened palace has 35 refurbished rooms adorned with costly furniture and works of art. The palace is inspired by a blend of Islamic, Indian, Moroccan and Persian influences. You’ll find beautiful crystal chandeliers imported from Europe, lifelike murals of far-flung places and cooling marble floors. On the very top floor is a large glass pyramid structure through which sunlight illuminates the floors below. The 12 astrological signs adorn the walls. The mystery of the palace continues with its rather unusual collection of marble statues, animal murals, antique artefacts and paintings, which all seem to be woven around stories of fiction.

The palace is open daily from 09.00 to 19.00. Tickets are AED 75 per person or AED 50 per person for groups. Please note that no photography is allowed inside.
