Visit Ras Al Khaimah

The Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah is an active and operational pearl farm. It is the place to visit for a pearl farm tour in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the top Emirati heritage activities.

Located in Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah, the city’s northernmost neighbourhood, Suwaidi Pearls was established by Abdulla Rashed Al Suwaidi in honor of his late grandfather, Mohammed, and to celebrate Ras Al Khaimah’s long pearl fishing history.

Abdulla recalled how he used to watch his grandfather disappear under the water for minutes at a time and return, clutching spherical translucent treasures that members of royal families would wear. Abdulla was convinced that Mohammed was half-man and half-fish.

Pearl Fishing History in the UAE

The long pearl fishing history in the UAE, particularly in Ras Al Khaimah, dates back over seven millennia. Archeologists have discovered that Ras Al Khaimah had a thriving pearl industry in the 12th century, the early part of the High Middle Ages or the Age of the Cistercians.

In fact, it was its flourishing pearl fishing industry that propelled the town of Julfar (medieval Ras Al Khaimah) into becoming one of the busiest and most important trading ports in the region from the Middle Ages up to the Early Modern period.

Traditional Pearl Fishing

Even today, pearl fishing remains one of the UAE’s most treasured traditions. Entire communities of men would dive for exotic pearls.

In the past, divers used turtle shell nose clips while diving. Divers also plugged their ears with wax. For energy, they consumed sweet dates and coffee before every dive.

Every man had a specific responsibility. This ensured boat safety, harmony, and efficiency. Outsiders were strictly forbidden, unless they had the approval of one of the local rulers.

Reviving Pearl Fishing Traditions

While village life in Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah, has changed over the years, the tradition of pearl fishing is still honored, with new efforts to revive it.

Abdulla Rashed Al Suwaidi built Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah because he appreciates the significance of pearl fishing in the Emirati culture. Today, his pearl farm at the foot of the majestic Al Hajar Mountains remains one of the most important bastions of pearl fishing traditions in Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE. Through Suwaidi Pearls, Abdulla is single-handedly working to revive the incredible, almost extinct tradition.

Many magical folkloric myths and legends surround the beautiful gemstones of the Arabian Gulf. Through a traditional pearl boat tour at Suwaidi Pearls, visitors can discover man’s history with pearls and the ocean and gain a deeper understanding of why Ras Al Khaimah is fondly referred to as “the pearl of the Emirates.”
