Dubai Racing Club (DRC), established in 1992, has been a cornerstone in developing and promoting horse racing in Dubai. The club organizes and hosts horse racing at the Meydan Racecourse from November through March, including the globally renowned Dubai World Cup. This event, the highlight of Dubai’s sporting and social calendar, attracts the finest horses and riders from around the globe. With total prize money of US$ 30.5 million, it is the world’s most spectacular race day.
The journey of horse racing in Dubai began in October 1981, with the first Thoroughbred race meeting held at the Camel Track. The inaugural Dubai World Cup occurred in 1996 at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai. With eleven runners and a purse of $4M, it quickly established itself as the richest race in the world. The race is held annually on the last Saturday in March and is open to Northern Hemisphere horses at least four years old and Southern Hemisphere horses at least three years of age.
Over the last twenty-three years, the Dubai World Cup has changed and faced its share of challenges. In 2006, the race was shown live for the first time on national television in the United States. The 14th running of the race in 2009 was the last time that the race was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. The following year, Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse, currently the world’s largest integrated racing facility, became the home of the Dubai World Cup.
The Dubai World Cup, created through the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, provides a global stage upon which the best horses in the world compete every year. The race takes place at Meydan Racecourse and is the pinnacle of the UAE racing season. The next race is set to take place on March 30, with dates and details about the 2024 edition to be announced soon. The Dubai World Cup is more than just a horse race; it’s a testament to the thrill of competition, the beauty of the sport, and the unity of the global horse racing community.
