Visit Ras Al Khaimah

Your relaxing Eid holiday may have ended, but thereโ€™s still that lingering need to escape the city. You donโ€™t want to travel too far though because thereโ€™s not enough time. Where can you go to recharge?

Wadi Shawka in Ras Al Khaimah is the best destination for a quick escape โ€” and thereโ€™s no entrance fee. Every adventurer, weekend warrior, and nature lover knows this captivating gem, which is a short drive from Sharjah and Dubai. This wadi is popular for its hiking trails, camping spots, and breathtaking views.ย

Whether you’re craving a sunrise hike, a splash in a refreshing wadi pool, or a night under the stars, Wadi Shawka delivers it all without the need for a plane ticket.ย

In this guide, weโ€™ll break down everything you need to know before you go, from what you can expect to what you can bring.

What to Expect

Located off Kadra road, Shawka, Ras Al Khaimah, Wadi Shawka runs from the Khari village, north of the Shawka village, joining the Wadi Esfai and the Wadi Ejili. Itโ€™s accessible from the majestic Jebel Hajar Mountains, so expect breathtaking, rugged beauty all around as you enjoy the many activities in this enchanting place.

And here are just some of the outdoor activities that perfectly blend adventure and tranquility.

Wadi Shawka Hike

Hiking is a popular weekend pursuit in Wadi Shawka for two reasons. One, itโ€™s a gorgeous location, and two, the trails are suitable for all levels. Whether youโ€™re a beginner or seasoned hiker, hiking in this Ras Al Khaimah destination is going to be an exploration.

Against a backdrop of picturesque mountains, the trails give way to sightseeing as wildflowers, palm trees, and natural pools of water capture your attention.ย

One of the more popular spots to hike is the Wadi Shawka Dam Mountain Trail. The 10-kilometer loop trail is considered moderately challenging, with an elevation gain of 378 meters.

Another trail will take you through hills, streams of water, and natural pools, so you can take a dip after a long walk. This lesser-known, out-and-back trail typically takes about three hours to complete. Because thereโ€™s vegetation all along this course, you might even encounter wild donkeys or goats.

Wadi Shawka Camping

Some visitors bring a basket of goodies and enjoy a picnic at designated spots around the Wadi Shawka Dam Park. Others prefer to spend more than a couple of hours in this serene place by bringing a tent and camping under the stars.ย

Wadi Shawka offers several spots for camping overnight. With peaceful surroundings and beautiful mountains, youโ€™re sure to enjoy an evening of stargazing.ย

You can camp on your own, or book with a camping rental company, so you donโ€™t have to gather all the gear. The company will provide the tent, cooking vessels, and other camping essentials.ย

Wadi Shawka Natural Pool

How about a dip in rain-made pools? Wading or dipping in these natural pools is a unique experience in Wadi Shawka. Wadiโ€™s natural pools are formed by heavy rainfall.

These pools are perfect for cooling down after a long hike, for frolicking with friends, or for taking selfies.ย

Who Should Try These?

Whether you just want a couple of hours hiking or plan to spend a night in a Wadi Shawka camping site, this Ras Al Khaimah destination is ideal for young and adult visitors.ย

For families, the kids may enjoy the refreshing natural pools and the occasional wildlife, from goats to donkeys. If your familyโ€™s quite the adventurous lot, the hiking trail from the Shawka dam to the natural pools should be easy enough for older kids.

For couples, the Wadi Shawkaโ€™s rugged beauty and serene surroundings create quite the romantic ambiance for cozy hikes or camping.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The best time to visit Wadi Shawka is between December and March because the temperatures are ideal โ€” not too high, not too low.

If your visits coincide during the summer months, plan for an early morning or late afternoon trip to Wadi Shawka. Itโ€™ll be much cooler for hiking, swimming, or camping.

What to Bring

What you bring will depend on what you plan to do here. But because the Wadi Shawka temperature can be intensely hot during summer and at certain times of the day, make sure you have the following:

  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle

We also recommend that you fully charge your phones and bring torches or flashlights if you intend to hike late.

Because there are no snack bars and drinking water suppliers in the area, bring as much food and water as you need.

If youโ€™re not camping overnight, make your way to Jebel Jais, which is the highest peak in the UAE, and have a memorable meal. Jebel Jais is home to the highest restaurant in the Emirates: 1484 by Puro. Itโ€™s one of the best restaurants in Ras Al Khaimah.
