Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s northernmost Emirate, is an enticing and accessible destination from Oman. Learn more about the practicalities of a weekend Oman-to-Ras Al Khaimah road trip here, including drive times and border crossing information, and get a sample customizable itinerary.
This is what you need to know about traveling between Oman and Ras Al Khaimah by car.
Ras Al Khaimah is around a five-hour drive on major highways from Muscat. If you live west or north of Muscat, your journey time will be shorter.
The fastest route uses the Batinah Expressway past Sohar and heads into the UAE at the Khatmat Malaha or Al Dara border crossing.
Ras Al Khaimah neighbors Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, so getting to Ras Al Khaimah from this area is fast and straightforward.
By car is the easiest and fastest way to travel to Ras Al Khaimah. While you could fly to Dubai and then drive the one-hour trip north to Ras Al Khaimah, this is usually not faster. The flight is one hour, but the waiting, boarding, and disembarking times mean you don’t gain any time in Ras Al Khaimah.
The desert and mountain scenery between Muscat and Ras Al Khaimah is also frequently spectacular and well worth the drive.
The border crossing between Oman and the UAE is around halfway between Muscat and Ras Al Khaimah. The main checkpoints are open 24/7.
Expect document checks. The next section explains how the border crossing works and what documents you need to bring.
Make sure your insurance or rental agreement covers driving in the UAE before you set off.
At the border crossing, about halfway through your journey from Muscat to Ras Al Khaimah, you’ll need to show documentation to pass through. Be sure to carry:
First, check into your hotel. Ras Al Khaimah has a fantastic range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. Here are some examples.
Ras Al Khaimah is full of inspirational things to do. With scenery such as 68 km of coastline and Jebel Jais, the UAE’s tallest mountain, you are surrounded by beauty and nature.
Here are some recommended activities to include in your weekend itinerary.
At least two nights make the five-hour drive from Muscat to Ras Al Khaimah worthwhile, giving you a full day to explore before heading back. Three nights allow a gentler pace, letting you combine several activities with relaxation.
The easiest first-night plan is to check into your hotel and keep the evening low-key after the five-hour drive. Resorts and hotels offer on-site dining, so there’s no need to venture out. Save more active plans for day two once you’ve rested.
Plan the return drive by leaving Ras Al Khaimah in the morning or evening to avoid peak traffic at the Oman/UAE border crossing. Keep your passport, insurance documents, and Oman exit permit accessible in advance, since border checks add time. Building in an hour or two of buffer helps you cross without rushing.
A weekend drive from Muscat to Ras Al Khaimah is an easy way for Oman residents to enjoy a change of scenery without flying or extensive planning.
Whether you’re drawn to the desert, the coastline, or the mountain scenery, two to three nights are enough to explore Ras Al Khaimah’s highlights.
