This skills training course is authorised and certified through RAKTDA and is the prerequisite for the Mountain Leader assessment.  The terrain for this award is mountainous areas higher than 600m above sea level. Candidates should have previous hiking experience of areas such as those included in the Lowland Hill and Wadi Leader Award. This course is for those who want to take groups into mountainous terrain for single day, overnight or multi-day trips. The course covers all aspects of map work, compass use, navigational aids, expeditions, camp craft, safety considerations, route planning, risk assessments and emergency procedures.

The Mountain Leader Award is a RAKTDA accredited scheme, developed and administered by Hajar Mountain Adventures, the ONLY organisation to be given permission to run these RAKTDA certified courses, which would allow license application.

The Mountain Leader Training and Assessment Course was established to promote the safe enjoyment of the hills and mountains. The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and the group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains, hills and wadis of the Hajar Mountains.

It integrates experience, training and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in mountainous country. The Mountain Leader scheme offers the opportunity to gain technical competence in leading walkers in the hills and mountains. It is the combination of technical skills, wide experience and personal leadership qualities, which form the basis for effective group management, and the scheme trains and assesses all these aspects. It emphasises those skills, which a candidate may have difficulty in learning without expert guidance. There is a wide range of skills and knowledge that a mountain leader needs in order to operate effectively. Not only is it necessary to perform each element in isolation, it is also vital that leaders are able to combine several skills at any one time.

For example they need to be able to look after their group and navigate simultaneously, choose objectives appropriate to the experience, skills and motivation level of the group, plan according to the prevailing conditions and the leader’s own experience and ability, carry out or supervise relevant planning considerations e.g. parental consent, authority clearance, personal and medical information, finances, insurance and transport, complete detailed preparations e.g. plan routes, check access, obtain weather forecasts and brief the group, ensure the group is appropriately prepared for the activity and comply with current legislation relating to the activities.
