Since prehistoric times, pearls have played an essential role in people’s lives; many have been discovered in Neolithic sites across the UAE. Al Jazeera Al Hamra is the only remaining historical pearling village in the entire Gulf region; the rest were demolished with the discovery of oil. Al Jazeera Al Hamra translates from Arabic to mean Red Island.
Al Jazeera Al Hamra is the oldest village in the United Arab Emirates, representing thousands of years of classic architecture in the Middle East. It is also on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tentative List.
In the early 1970’s during the discovery of oil, the inhabitants left the Al Jazeera Al Hamra village.
