Dating back to 1879, Chamonix guide Jean Estéril Charlet devised abseiling or rappelling, a method of descending a steep or sheer rock face by moving down a rope. The abseiler controls his movement down the rope to terrafirma. He failed his first endeavour at Petit Dru but continued to attempt a perfect descent which he finally managed with his guides Prosper Payot and Frédéric Folliguet. Since then, it’s become a popular recreational activity indoors, from man-made structures and in nature.
