Wadi Naqib is an area of outstanding beauty in the UAEโ€™s mountains. Picture peaks surrounded by jagged red stone cliffs, narrow gorges, and beautiful pools, epitomizing the incredible geology of Ras Al Khaimah

Despite the dramatic scenery, Wadi Naqib is an accessible destination for hiking, offering a variety of trails to suit all ages and experience levels.

Here is a guide to the route options from the Wadi Naqib trailhead from local experts in Ras Al Khaimah, as well as some tips for having a safe and enjoyable hike.

Key Takeaways

  • Wadi Naqab offers two popular routes from different forks by the trailhead.
  • The longer route offers a full day of exhilarating hiking.
  • The shorter route still offers mesmerising views in around 5-6 hours of walking.
  • Wadi Naqab is also popular for shorter walks and picnics.
  • Make safety a priority when you hike at Wadi Naqab.

Wadi Naqab Hike: Trails Overview

Wadi Naqab is a dry riverbed for most of the year. It weaves through dramatic canyons in the Hajar Mountains and out into flatter desert terrain. As one of the most beautiful destinations in the UAE, itโ€™s also one of the best photography spots

Hikes from the Wadi Naqab trailhead vary from exhilarating long-distance walks to rival the famous Stairway to Heaven hike to more gentle family-friendly ambles.

Here are two popular, moderately challenging routes. Both take you through varied landscapes, tiny and high-altitude villages and across thrilling ledges.

Sheri Village and Baqal Village Hike

Allow 12 hours

This extensive out-and-back hike takes you through some of the most remarkable scenery in the UAE. Itโ€™s long, but not particularly difficult if youโ€™re fit, healthy and an experienced hiker.

The trail begins at Wadi Naqab and forks right. It takes in:

  • Boulder fields
  • A bat cave
  • Steep steps up the mountainside
  • Sheri village
  • A balcony path towards the mountaintop
  • Jebel Yibir Tower
  • The donkey path to Baqal Village.

The Red Wall Hike

Allow 6 hours

This shorter walk is similar in difficulty to the Sheri Village hike above. Camping is possible at the Red Wall, where the train flattens out temporarily, which allows for great sunset and sunrise views before you continue on your way to Al Sanat Village.

To embark on this hike, park at Wadi Naqab, then follow the red marks on the left fork. Itโ€™s another there-and-back hike, returning on the same path. This hike encompasses:

  • The sheer cliff face, known as the Red Wall
  • Seasonal pools
  • Wadi Koob UAE flag
  • Sanat Village.

How Difficult is Wadi Naqab?

Well-equipped, moderately experienced hikers will enjoy the trails at Wadi Naqib very much. There are challenging routes that do not need specialist rock climbing equipment to explore, but you will need a head for heights since some paths feel quite exposed.

These Ras Al Khaimah hiking trails are suitable for fit, healthy beginners, provided they are confident in their navigation skills or are accompanied by a guide.

Families and inexperienced hikers might prefer to stick to exploring vehicle tracks and the terrain closer to their parked vehicle. Wadi Naqab is a popular picnic spot in Ras Al Khaimah.

Where Is the Trail Start/End?

Wadi Naqab trailhead is around 2 hours from Dubai and 40 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah city. You can reach it by taking a right turn off 2 33C Street from Ras Al Khaimah city at Al Salihia.

Itโ€™s wise to approach Wadi Naqab in a 4×4 vehicle. During the last few kilometers towards the trailhead, the terrain gets too difficult for an ordinary car to handle.

The Best Time of Year for the Wadi Naqab Hike

Between October and April is the best time of year for hiking in Ras Al Khaimah. Over the summer, Wadi Naqab hikes are not recommended due to the heat.

Wadi Naqab Hiking Safety

Wadi Naqab is in remote, desert terrain. Therefore, there are some vital safety considerations for hiking. Always:

  • Carry more water than you think you’ll need and some food for emergencies.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing and sunscreen.
  • Carry an extra layer of clothing for emergencies.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses.
  • Take regular breaks.
  • Carry both on- and offline maps, torches, and a first aid kit.
  • Ensure that you have left your route details with a trusted person.

Remember that Wadi Naqab can fill with water quickly, so never attempt a hike when rain is expected.
